On the term 'Wilderness':
To truly work to make both the outdoor community and outdoor spaces more inclusive, we must continue to push ourselves to learn. Here at OGE, we are learning every day how to move from education on concepts of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to taking action and practicing these principles.
This fundraiser, the Everyone's Wilderness Fundraiser, uses the term 'wilderness'. For many, this term has been associated with nature—we know now that the word 'wilderness' was coined by colonists and has offensive implications. To quote Erfan Daliri, a social change consultant:
'Wilderness' was used by the colonizers who refused to acknowledge the validity of the civilizations and societies that lived in harmony with their natural world. As we begin looking into the ways the word was and still is being used, we notice that in the subtext of these phrases there still remains the sentiment of ‘civilization as separate to wilderness’.
We ask that you join us on this journey of self-education, reflection, and initiating change to make the outdoor community more inclusive, equitable, diverse, and just.
Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Fundraisers
OGE’s goal from day one has been to encourage folks to get outside — regardless of their experience. We want to take this mission to the next level and focus our efforts on lowering barriers to the outdoors for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other historically excluded communities.
The outdoor industry has a lot of work to do when it comes to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) — OGE included. We want to do our part to change this narrative by supporting organizations that lower existing barriers to outdoor recreation.
OGE is committed to supporting these organizations’ missions to achieve a more diverse and inclusive outdoor community.
Fundraisers that support New England-based nonprofits/organizations (or national organizations with a Vermont/New England chapter) focused on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the outdoors.
This could be a center that supports LGBTQ+ folks that needs funding for their monthly hiking and biking events, a new club that supports BIPOC participation in rock climbing that needs some cash for their start-up, or anything else that supports JEDI work in the outdoors.
OGE will work with our outdoor brand partners to host Fundraiser Giveaways to support these organizations.
To enter to win a fundraiser's prize package, you can donate a minimum of $5 to the beneficiary organization and enter your email contact information. The more you donate, the more entries you'll get!
Participating brands, depending on their contribution to the prize package, have pledged to match the first $500 in donations made by you and others, and 100% of donations will go directly to the beneficiary.
Our Fall Beneficiary
Unlikely Riders is a Vermont BIPOC collective mobilizing their community to find healing with the mountains while claiming space in the snow sports industry and culture. Their work is to encourage all Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to engage in fun, radical joy and offer support to find healing through the mountains while centering their needs and abilities.
Our Brand Partners
Black Diamond Equipment
When Black Diamond pledged to spend $250,000 in an effort to increase diversity and accessibility in the outdoors, they committed ourselves to finding real solutions. They acknowledge that there are a multitude of issues that need addressing, but this is their starting place. To ensure they had direction to all of our initiatives, they built their objectives around accomplishing four things:
- Creation of internal awareness and understanding
- Building of industry leaders
- Support and community integration with grassroot affiliate groups
- Driving athlete and ambassador team diversification
Outdoor Research makes products designed to get people outdoors. They believe that the more people who get outside, the better they, and the world, will be. It’s only with each other that they’ve made it this far, and it’s only by inviting new partners into the fold that they will grow and progress as a brand, as people, and as a force for greater equality and justice in the world. If you believe that the outdoors is better when shared by all, join them in the journey. Read more here.
SCARPA is, and always has been committed to taking care of people and the community. They have built their culture and business around the values of Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and consider these priorities in everything they do. SCARPA provides continuous DEI training for staff. This year they included our sales reps and athlete team, and DEI is now a standard part of employee development. SCARPA supports DEI-focused businesses and associations such as: Brown Girls Climb, Colorado Outward Bound School Diversity Scholarship Fund, Environmental Learning for Kids and Camber Outdoors, among others. SCARPA has also developed a donation matching program for SNA Staff, Reps and Athletes who make a donation to an organization or cause related to Justice, Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.
