Berne Broudy
It's the weekend and you wake up without a plan. Here are four great Vermont day trips you can pull off without too advance planning. 1. Head for the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center. Rent a stand up paddleboard, a kayak or a sail boat. Hit Ali Babas Kabob shop on your way to the waterfront, and pick up wraps for lunch. Paddle past split rock point, find a flat and inviting spot on the shore, and have a picnic. 2. Hike Camel's Hump. Don your hiking boots, fill your waterbottle, grab an energy bar or a PB&J and a light jacket, and throw it all in a daypack. Head up the Burrows Trail on Came's Hump, Vermont's third highest peak. If you're only up for a little hike, stop and the bench about 1/2 mile up the trail and enjoy the train of hikers. If you're game to summit, head to the top. Camels Hump is on Vermont's Long Trail.

3. Take a ride at Catamount Outdoor Family Center. Catamount has beginner and intermediate trails. Pay a day fee of $10 ($6 for kids) and ride for an hour or all day. if you don't have a bike, rent one there. 4. Pick whatever fruit is in season. Owls Head Berry Farm, Adam's Berry Farm, Shelburne Orchards.... Call and find out what's juicy and ripe, and harvest desert!
