We Got You Fam: Our Favorite Family-Friendly Campsites
Carolyn Lawrence
Looking for a weekend getaway in the solitude of the Vermont wilderness? Not interested in hiking late into the night after a long day at work to find the perfect spot? We’ve got you. Here are four of the best local campsites to help you enjoy some time with the ones who matter most.
Little River State Park
The vast Little River State Park Campground is one of central Vermont’s most popular destinations for groups looking for a weekend away. While not particularly secluded, the 81 tent sites are all within walking distance of sandy swimming beaches, grassy recreation areas, and a boat ramp. Renting a kayak or SUP from the state park is easy and affordable (and will tire the kids out nicely). The park interpreter is on-hand for night hikes and frog scouting sessions. Of course, miles of trails wind in and out of the campground, offering just the right amount of adventure. For those looking for a little more peace and quiet, there are 27 additional dispersed campsites along the water accessible only by watercraft. Number of campsites: 70 tent/RV sites, 20 lean-to sites, 5 cabins, 27 remote tent sites Facilities available: Restrooms with flush toilets, hot water, coin-operated showers Link: https://vtstateparks.com/littleriver.html
Burton Island
Pack your bathing suits—it’s time to play Swiss Family Robinson. Head down to Kill Kare State Park to hitch a ten-minute ride on the Island Runner Ferry, which will shuttle you out to Burton Island. Campsites on the island are limited, which makes securing a spot competitive, but keeps the island feeling tranquil. Hiking trails here are flat, making them easily navigable for the aspiring trekker. The park staff offers nature programs and talks on the island’s storied past. Even if you only have time for a day trip, spread out a picnic lunch on the grass and lay claim to the volleyball net. Just be ready to defend yourself against rogue pirates. Number of campsites: 14 tent sites, 26 lean-to sites, 3 cabins, 4 remote tent sites Facilities available: Restrooms with flush toilets, coin-operated showers Link: https://vtstateparks.com/burton.html
Elmore State Park
Is the family up for something to up the ante? How does a summit hike to the top of Elmore Mountain sound? Situated right on the trailhead, Elmore State Park is a perfect place to spend the night before hitting the trail early. The lake spread out beside the mountain also means the opportunity for lounging on the wide, sandy beach while the rest of the fam splashes in the shallows. Time to finish that book you started all those months ago. Number of campsites: 44 tent/RV sites, 15 lean-to sites Facilities available: Restrooms with flush toilets, hot water, coin-operated showers Link: https://vtstateparks.com/elmore.html
Green Mountain Family Campground
It’s right there in the name. Privately owned and operated, this campground is situated inside the Green Mountain National Forest and is home to such amenities as an outdoor pool and hot showers. Mountain biking trails lead from the campsite and wind away into the trees. Bristol Falls (aka Bartlett Falls) tumbles into a secluded swimming hole that will delight kids and adults alike. Bonus: the little ones will sleep like rocks. The New Haven river also lends itself well to fishing, tubing, and kayaking. Number of campsites: 48 tent/RV sites Facilities available: Restrooms with flush toilets, hot water, showers, laundry Link: https://greenmountainfamily.com/ Excited to gather your crew?
